Over 75 passionate young Ghanaians gathered in Accra on May 19th – 20th 2023, armed with their laptops and a shared goal: tackling climate change booth-for-booth. The 2023 Wiki Green Conference, a collaborative effort between World Inspiring Network, Wiki Green Initiatives, Wikipedia, and other climate allies, proved a powerful catalyst for learning, connection, and action.
“Involving to Evolve: The New Climate Paradigm” was the theme, and they did. Interactive workshops tackled topics including digital storytelling for impactful environmental advocacy, navigating climate law, and crafting effective communication strategies. Renowned experts in climate and media served up knowledge and ignited discussions, while networking opportunities fostered bonds between youth organisations, NGOs, and academic institutions.
The conference wasn’t just about talk; it was about action. Participants dove into “edit-a-thons,” contributing to enriching Wikipedia with accurate and accessible information on climate change issues relevant to Ghana and Africa. This vital step ensures local perspectives and experiences inform the global conversation on climate action.
The impact wasn’t confined to the conference walls. Media coverage raised public awareness about youth engagement in climate activism and the power of digital platforms in promoting sustainability. Empowered with new skills, connections, and a platform like Wikipedia, these young changemakers are poised to amplify their voices and actions far beyond the conference room.
